"How much will there be?" is one of the most common questions crematory staff and funeral directors hear, and the honest answer is more precise than most people expect. Here is what determines the amount, and how to turn it into an urn decision.

The numbers

An adult cremation returns about 4 to 8 pounds of remains, with roughly 5 pounds typical. By volume, that is around 150 to 200 cubic inches — close to a half-gallon. A useful mental model: the remains of an average adult fit comfortably in a standard 200-cubic-inch urn with room to spare.

What determines the amount

Cremated remains are processed bone mineral, so the quantity tracks the skeleton, not body fat or muscle. That produces three patterns. Height matters most: taller people have larger skeletons and produce more remains. Sex matters: men average more than women at the same height because of denser, heavier bone. Age matters: bone density declines in later life, so remains from elderly individuals often weigh less than the rule of thumb predicts.
